  • Solubility: Acetone >5.0% w/w; cyclohexanone >5.0% w/w; ethanol 1.5% w/w; ethyl acetate 3% w/w; MEK >5.0% w/w
  • Application Note: NIR983A should be evaluated in your actual resin, solvent system, coating, or optical stack before production approval.

Why teams choose NIR983A

  • 1064 nm Relevance: NIR983A is used in applications where attenuation near 1064 nm is required, including polycarbonate optical filter and laser safety eyewear development. It should be selected by measured transmission or optical density at the customer’s final thickness, not by λmax alone.
  • Polycarbonate experience: NIR983A has been evaluated in polycarbonate systems, but it requires controlled processing. Heat exposure, residence time, moisture, and dispersion method can affect color, clarity, and NIR performance.
  • Solvent System Flexibilty: NIR983A has documented solubility in several common organic solvents, making it a candidate for coatings, inks, cast films, and solvent-based optical filter systems.
  • Application-Driven Support: QCR Solutions helps customers screen NIR983A by application, resin, thickness, wavelength target, optical density, visible color limits, and processing conditions rather than recommending from product code alone.

Applications & industries

  • Polycarbonate Optical Filters

NIR983A is a candidate for molded or compounded polycarbonate optical parts where near-infrared attenuation is required. Processing should be controlled to reduce thermal degradation risk. Masterbatch preparation is recommended before final molding.

  • Laser Safety Eyewear Development

NIR983A is used in laser safety eyewear applications involving 1064 nm attenuation. QCR does not certify finished eyewear. The customer must validate final optical density, visible light transmission, impact performance, and applicable eyewear standards in the finished lens.

  • Solvent-Based Optical Coatings

NIR983A may be evaluated in solvent-based coating systems where the dye can be fully dissolved and uniformly distributed. Solvent choice, dry film thickness, binder chemistry, and cure conditions must be validated.

  • NIR Attenuating Films and Cast Parts

NIR983A may be useful where a customer needs near-infrared absorption in a film, cast polymer, or optical stack. Final performance depends on path length, dye loading, matrix compatibility, and whether haze or visible color must be minimized.

  • Custom NIR Dye Packages

For applications requiring deeper attenuation, broader coverage, or specific visible color balance, NIR983A may be evaluated with other NIR absorbers. QCR can help identify candidate combinations once the wavelength target, thickness, and optical requirements are known

  Faq

 – Does NIR983A absorb at 1064 nm?

Yes. NIR983A is used in optical filter and laser safety eyewear applications where attenuation near 1064 nm is required. Its listed absorbance maximum is not exactly 1064 nm; the TDS lists λmax at 983 nm in methanol and 1015 nm in polycarbonate. Because 1064 nm falls on the longer-wavelength side of the absorption band, final attenuation depends on dye loading, lens thickness, resin system, processing conditions, and the customer’s required optical density or transmission target.

 – Can NIR983A be used in polycarbonate?

Yes, but processing must be controlled. NIR983A is thermally sensitive in polycarbonate. QCR recommends masterbatch preparation, dry resin, short residence time, and melt temperatures near or below 260 °C where possible.

 – Can NIR983A be dry-blended into the molding press?

QCR does not recommend dry-blending NIR983A powder directly into the press. For polycarbonate molding, a masterbatch is preferred for dispersion, dosing accuracy, and reduced risk of thermal hotspots.

 – Is NIR983A a finished laser safety product?

No. NIR983A is a dye ingredient used in optical filter and laser safety eyewear development. Finished lenses or eyewear must be validated and certified by the customer according to the applicable safety standard and final design.

 – Can QCR recommend a loading level?

Only after reviewing the application. Loading depends on wavelength target, optical density, visible light transmission, path length, resin or coating system, and processing conditions.

 – Can NIR983A be used in solvent systems?

Yes, NIR983A has documented solubility in several organic solvents, including acetone, cyclohexanone, ethanol, ethyl acetate, and MEK. The final coating or film must still be tested for dye compatibility, clarity, stability, and optical performance.
